MicroBioGen, based in Macquarie Park, New South Wales, has been honoured with the Resources and Energy award at the 62nd Australian Export Awards. This accolade recognises their exceptional international success in developing superior yeast micro-organisms for industrial applications.
Established in 2001, MicroBioGen has focused on enhancing the industrial capabilities of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a yeast integral to products worth approximately US$2 trillion annually. Their proprietary technology platform and extensive library of elite yeast genetics have enabled the creation of high-performance yeast strains. These strains are now commercialised through long-term licensing and collaborations, reaching markets across North America, Europe, and South America.
A notable partnership with a global biotech leader led to the development of Innova® branded yeasts, which produce over 40 billion litres of bioethanol annually in North America without additional CO₂ emissions or costs. This success has solidified MicroBioGen’s reputation as a leader in yeast innovation.
Looking ahead, MicroBioGen plans a significant lab expansion in 2025 and is developing superior and sustainable wine yeast, poised to impact the global beverage industry. Their commitment to innovation and sustainability continues to drive their export growth and international recognition.
