MEDIA RELEASE: MicroBioGen to Present at Australian Renewable Fuels Week

Sydney, Australia – February 26, 2025 – MicroBioGen, a Sydney-based biotechnology company, will highlight a major opportunity for onshoring Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production at the Australian Renewable Fuels Week, held from March 4 to March 6, 2025, at the State Library of NSW.

Geoff Bell, CEO and co-founder of MicroBioGen, will discuss strategies to enhance SAF production in Australia, focusing on yeast technology innovations that maximize the conversion and output of the sugar cane industry.

MicroBioGen has achieved global success in improving the industrial capabilities of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a microorganism which underpins industries worth over US$2 trillion annually. The Innova® series of ethanol yeasts, co-developed by MicroBioGen and Novonesis, significantly increase the efficiency and sustainability of fuel ethanol production in the US, Europe, and South America, with adoption expanding worldwide.

Bell’s presentation will draw on MicroBioGen’s decades of expertise in developing industry-leading yeasts used by ethanol producers globally to demonstrate the potential of sugar cane as a feedstock for ethanol and ethanol-to-jet (ETJ) production in Australia. Additionally, Bell will discuss how MicroBioGen’s non-GM yeast technology enables the conversion of ethanol side streams such as dunder into high-quality animal feed, thereby enhancing biofuel production sustainability and food security, while providing new revenue streams and emission reduction opportunities for Australia’s ethanol refineries.

MicroBioGen was recently awarded the 2024 Australian Export Award in the Resources and Energy category.

Geoff Bell, CEO and co-founder at MicroBioGen, says: “I look forward to participating in Australian Renewable Fuels Week once again and contribute to the growth of a cost-competitive and sustainable SAF industry in Australia.”

“Successfully deploying SAF in Australia will require large quantities of suitable substrates and competitive costs, with a key pathway being the conversion of sugars to ethanol and then to jet fuel. MicroBioGen is dedicated to enhancing second-generation ethanol economics and sustainability through its innovative ‘fuel and food’ technology.”
